Assignment 5 CTTB Well

CTTB Well story, by Tom Johnson

The reason that Mendocino State Hospital was sold to Dharma Realm Buddhist Association was because there was no (big) source of water for the facility. When the Master bought the property the City of the 10,000 Buddhas did not have a large water source. The Master was informed of this problem and had a vision of a dragons head sticking out of a field behind Joyous Giving House where our present well is. The Master had the drill team come out and drill into the ground. The people drilling said that this was the wrong place to drill for water. The Master said, 'No, this is the place.' The men dug down 100', then 200', then 300' feet down. They struck water, but the Master said, "drill deeper!" At 500' the drill team ran into an underground river which is flowing unto this day.

(There is a elementary school exercise where kids in a circle will tell a story. One person will tell a story then the next person will tell the story and each person will try to repeat the story. By the end of the exercise the story will have changed into something else. It seems that the story above has changed many many times. I am going to gather more stories and post them onto this blog. I will reference names and hear-say.

Assignment 5 addendum by Tom Johnson

This will probably be my last blog entry...

I received three different accounts about how the Master found water behind Joyous Giving House in the field... None of these accounts are to be taken as the "official" version of how the Master found water. These are strictly "hear-says:" People heard about how the Master found water and this is what they were telling people around CTTB last Winter at the Amitabha Session.

1st Version: The Master had a staff and poked around for the place to drill for water. It was like he was 'witching' for water. However, the Master was different: he had dragons telling him where to go. When he found the place he demanded that the men drill for water at that spot. The men were reluctant but did as they were told. As they dug deeper and deeper, they found no water. However, the Master was adamant: he told them, "DIG!" Finally, they found water. (from Phil Hersche who was told this around X-mas time by some of our over seas visitors who came for the Amitabha Session 09'.

2nd Version: The hole was dug and it gushed water (like an oil well). When the water came up, two fish came out of the well and a rainbow formed overhead. (Phil Hersche and Michael "New York" also told me of this)

3rd version: The Master was 'led' to the location of where to dig by some dragons. That is how he found the water. (another version that was told to Michael "New York")

  1. What I heard is that the Venerable Master told the workers who were trying to find water to dig in a particular place. The workers protested that they had already digged there before, but the Venerable Master insisted that they dig there. Sure enough, water spurted from that place, and that is where the water source today.

  2. In discussing the story with those who first lived at 'The City' about the lack of water being the reason why the hospital was closed down there are obviously differing opinions. There are many who stress that the reason for closing down the hospital had to do with economics, not water, or lack thereof and that this was not the only facility closed by Reagan when he was governor of California.
This is the same as with the story about the Master indicating where to dig the well which is now used - some of the older residents claim this is just a story. However, there is truth in being able to witch for water as it has been done for centuries around the world.

  3. The version of the story I heard is the same as the one posted by Xiaodan Jin. In that version, I heard that there was no water when CTTB was purchased, which was another reason why the hospital was closed. The other reason was financial. In that version the Venerable Master wasn't particularly worried about it when he decided to purchase the property.

  4. I also heard the version described by Xiaodan Jin. It seems like the only significant difference between the version we heard and the one in the post is that we didn't hear about the Venerable Master having a vision of a dragon's head in the field.
