The VM said that our parents are living Buddhas. So we should bow to our parents in return for their kindness and to show our respect for them. Compliance or obedience could pass for filial or respectful behavior. For a non-obedient child which the VM's parents thought he was, bowing moved them to tears. The VM bowed to his parents because he felt that they were Bodhisattvas.
